A little about me

I was born on September 15 ,1944 in Toco, Trinidad in the Caribbean in the countryside near the sea. I have an elder brother who was born on May 6 1938. When we were infants we moved down to a small town near the capital city. We stayed there for about four years then we moved back to the countryside where we were born.

We loved playing with cousins and friends in the sea,the forest and playing games in the yards around the house where we lived. What I loved most of all, was listening to the adults tell folk tales. Some of the stories were frightening but I enjoyed them and always wanted to make up some of my own. I loved read fairytale books and books about magicians and magical creatures, witches and zombies. I loved the rivers, the big trees and wild animals what roamed the forest nearby our village. My maternal grandmother was the best storyteller of all;the first time I heard her I wanted to be a storyteller and a writer.I also loved music made up little tunes to go with my childhood stories and nursery-poems.

At school my best subjects were:poetry essay writing,English, literature, history, music and art. I loved taking part in school plays and poetry recitation.I never did very well in maths and science. I never had any difficulty in reading,I read very early. My mother said as a child I was always with a book.

I took part in pantomime productions and organised choral groups, drama groups and was a member of a small music band.

I left Trinidad and came to England to further my career and studies. Before I began my studies,I worked in the Post Office and was also a Stock Keeper at a store in London and a Hardware Factory in Hertfordshire.I published my first book of poetry. Then I got married and my second book of poetry was published.

My first child was born, then I entered the University of Kent at Canterbury where I studied English with African and Caribbean Studies. I published several books for children and adults.I also became a freelance storyteller visiting schools and colleges and all over Britain, not only storytelling but lecturing as a writer in Residence.

‘The crocodile is lord of the jungle and all the animals are terrified of him. And the selfish crocodile won’t even let them go into the river! Then one day the selfish crocodile gets very bad toothache and it is up to the animals to decide whether they want to help him. This is a lively, funny tale that has wonderful animal illustrations. It is a modern classic.’
